CHAT 10 - Curator of the Ingram Collection and writer Jo Baring in conversation with sculptor Olivia Bax
To mark the publication of ‘Revisiting Modern British Art’, a wide-ranging and thought-provoking publication, the book’s editor, art historian Jo Baring, will be in conversation with artist Olivia Bax, a former studio assistant to Sir Anthony Caro. The pair will discuss the influence and enduring impact of the art made in Britain in the 20th century, debate the new ways in which we can look at modern British art and consider the legacy of artists such as Caro on Bax’s own sculptural practice.
The work of Olivia Bax is often characterised by familiar elements such as a hook, handle or vessel presented in unconventional, coloured forms. However, it is the texture of the surface which offers the viewer the most immediate insight. Bax generates her own paper pulp to cover and form a mantle over linear armatures. Moulding each sculpture in this way creates the distinctive texture of the work. Rooted in drawing, the work carries instinctive gestures from start to finish to suggest an action or feeling.
After the talk, Jo will be doing a book signing of Revisiting Modern British Art.
Cedars Hall Arts Talks Series
We launched CHATS in response to Antony Gormley’s new sculpture DOUBT, on loan to Wells for a period of 18 months from the end of August 2021. These monthly talks will usually take place on Thursdays at 7pm in Cedars Hall, Wells Cathedral School. Subject to the speaker’s agreement audiences will be able to livestream the talks. Young musicians from Wells will perform in the auditorium before each talk. There will be an opportunity to continue the thought-provoking conversation after the talk with a glass of wine and food.
